ABOUT ME

The Face Behind The Blog
Hi! I’m Jess, a travel enthusiast, photographer, writer, & child development expert behind Next Up Adventure. I have a love for hidden gems, and find joy in sharing travel tips & helpful guides.
My home is in Vancouver BC and I share Canadian (and beyond!) destinations and roadtrips to inspire you to know that you can lead an adventurous life, even with kids.
I have travelled across North America, finding adventure travel experiences, many times along with my young child. I want families and travellers to know that adventure travel does not have to mean extreme sports or risks, and that adventure travel is accessible to most

My Story
Blogging & Traveling With Kids
Living in Canada
I am a born and raised Canadian (insert all your Canadian jokes here some are very true). I spent my childhood playing outside, building forts in the forest, camping, and being covered in dirt. Canada is one of the most Northern countries in the world, and it’s a huge country geographically, with a relatively small population for it’s size. This means that there are a lot of natural spaces, including 48 National Parks, and thousands of Provincial Parks. The geography is varied including prairies, big mountains, forests, rainforests, arctic landscapes, badlands, oceans, lakes, the list goes on! I am still learning about my country as an adult. I have always loved exploring and being in nature and as an adult found myself “popping” out to the mountains after work. My life was kind of flipped upside down (even more so than having a child tends to do) when I had significant pregnancy complications and ended up in hospital for 4 months. My son was born prematurely, and also had an extended hospital stay. When we finally got to come home, my son was immunocompromised, and I was told that the best place to hang out was outside, so that is exactly what we did. By the time the Pandemic hit in 2020, we were already well versed in socializing and recreating outside, and I really came to know that all places have hidden gems if you take the time to find them!
Why I Blog
My Experience with Traveling With Kids
I have taken my children on so many trips I can’t even count. Long flights, silly long road trips, and fun day-trips close to home. We’ve done all of these! What a way to learn about the world, experience different cultures and perspectives, take care of our planet, and have bonding experiences together. My heart bursts just thinking of all the moments exploring and learning new things. One of my favourite experiences, so far, was exploring the Khutzeymateen Inlet in Northern Canada, and safely seeing 15+ Grizzly Bears along with my young son. Our memories of the experience are different, he remembers binocular, and I will never forget the bears.
Where Am I Now?
I live in Vancouver with my family, and am truly grateful to have easy, safe access to nature, the ocean, forests, and mountains. In 2020, I found the opportunity to really explore British Columbia. Once I started, I realized that I could spend the rest of my life exploring BC, and still not see it all. I am a fully qualified BC travel expert now! I love exploring and hiking all around the South Coast of BC. I grew up close to the Canadian Rockies and also make frequent visits to Alberta. I want to explore everywhere! These days you can most often find me roadtripping around Western Canada and the PNW, although I love to explore new places, and have big plans to do a round the world trip with my family.
